Re: My previous posts about public education

For those who recently began following this blog, I am a graduate student, and my studies are funded via Teaching Assistantships. I am currently in my third semester of TA-ing undergrad history (and related disciplinary) courses. I have observed in my students time and time again a general lapse in the development of critical thinking skills, and I have always blamed this fact not on public education/educators, but on standardized testing.

Another TA and graduate colleague just linked me to this article, and I think it is really worth a read for any of you who want to learn more about the ideological forces behind determining what students in the US public school system are allowed to know, and what skills they are allowed to develop.
